Cupping also known as wash boarding is the milder form of floor damage.
Up until recently my eng wood floors looked great with a smooth surface and sat perfectly flat and solid onto of the cement.
Typically when hardwood flooring is installed there should some allowance given for this movement.
Although sealed with a protective coating hardwood floors can still absorb moisture.
As stated in steve s comment the floor is rising excessively in the middle.

Solid wood flooring takes in moisture when there is a high level of humidity in the air and then the flooring lets that moisture go when the humidity in the atmosphere reduces again.
Wood is a porous material that expands and contracts naturally depending on the humidity levels in the air around it.
Warping and cupping are the two main types of floor damage and each cause varying degrees of deterioration.
Hardwood floors can lift when the nails holding them aren t secure or there aren t enough of them.
However very recently i have noticed that a section of the wooden floor has started to rise up at the seam between the boards creating an uneven surface.
